Online kanban board: projects and sprint tasks in Syntra
A kanban board lays work out in columns by stage, and cards move from left to right until they reach the last column. Syntra has two such boards: a board of the projects in your portfolio on every plan, and a sprint task board on the Business and Enterprise plans.
Why a team needs kanban
Kanban shows where work is stuck without a meeting or a report: if cards pile up in In review, the problem is visible at once.
- A spreadsheet of statuses goes stale quickly, because someone has to remember to update it.
- With dozens of projects, it is hard to see how many are on hold or in testing without a board.
- A team that works in sprints needs a board of the current sprint, not of every task at once.
Two boards in Syntra
- Board of projectsColumns Not started, In progress, Testing, On hold, Done, Cancelled: drag a project and its status changes. On every plan.Learn more →
- Sprint task boardColumns Not started → In progress → In review → Done, story points on the cards, grouping by assignee or project. Business and Enterprise.Learn more →
- List and groupsThe same projects can be viewed as a list or in groups, and a project’s tasks as a list you can reorder by dragging.Learn more →
- The board on a phoneOn a narrow screen the board becomes a status switch with a list of cards — no sideways scrolling.
Example: the boards at tymko.tech
The demo company tymko.tech is a fictional restaurant chain used in the Syntra screenshots.
- The portfolio. The operations director opens projects as a kanban: Supplier Portal is still in Not started, Delivery Partner Integration is On hold, the rest are In progress.
- A status change. After acceptance he drags Kitchen Display System from In progress to Testing — the project status updates for everyone.
- The IT sprint. The IT team looks at the current sprint board grouped by assignee: one developer has 34 story points against a capacity of 21.
- Unloading. The Unload me button suggests which task to hand to a colleague or return to the backlog; only a person’s click changes the plan.
Good to know
- The board columns follow Syntra’s statuses: custom columns and WIP limits cannot be set up.
- There is no task board for a single project outside a sprint: inside a project, tasks are shown as a list.
- The sprint task board is on the Business and Enterprise plans; the board of projects is on every plan.
Questions and answers
What is a kanban board, in simple words?
A kanban board is a set of stage columns (To do, In progress, Done) along which task cards move from left to right. It shows how much work is at each stage and where it is stuck.
Can I use a kanban board for free?
Yes, the board of projects in Syntra is available on the Free plan (up to 3 people and 5 projects). The sprint task board with story points comes with the Business (€149 a month) and Enterprise (€399) plans.
How is kanban different from Scrum?
Kanban is a continuous flow of work through stage columns, while Scrum splits work into fixed-length sprints with planning and a review. Syntra supports both: the board of projects for flow, and sprints of 1, 2 or 4 weeks with a backlog, burndown and team velocity.
Can I set up my own columns?
No, the board columns in Syntra are fixed and follow the statuses of projects and tasks. That keeps statuses the same across teams, so reports and the AI assistant count them the same way.
