A Jira alternative: Syntra vs Jira for project management

Jira is a task tracker for software teams with configurable workflows, sprints and Atlassian Marketplace apps, while Syntra is a tool for managers and PMOs that brings the project portfolio, risks, documents and an AI assistant into one place. If your developers already work in Jira, Syntra does not have to replace it: through the two-way connector it can be the PMO layer on top.

When Jira is the better choice

Jira is the better choice for a software team that wants to shape its process: its own statuses and transitions, fields, automation and time tracking on tasks.1,3 If you need a timeline of work, phone apps and Atlassian Marketplace integrations, Jira gives you that and Syntra does not: Syntra has no Gantt chart and no time tracking.

For large organisations Jira has an Enterprise plan and a self-managed Data Center edition,1 and planning across several teams with dependencies on Premium.4 If the main question is how to plan the work of a hundred developers, choose Jira; if it is what is happening with every project in the company, look at Syntra.

Switching from Jira, or using both

Syntra does not have to replace Jira. The two-way Jira connector syncs the title, deadline, status (To Do, In Progress, Done) and priority of tasks: developers stay in Jira, and a manager sees those tasks next to every company project, the risks and the budget. Jira projects are matched to Syntra projects once, you choose the direction and frequency of the sync, and connectors come with the Enterprise plan. How connectors work.

If you switch completely, the connector in the “to Syntra only” direction brings over the tasks of the matched projects with title, status, deadline and priority; it does not move descriptions, comments or change history. The full history can be exported from Jira to CSV, Excel or XML,30 but Syntra does not import those files directly. The way back is open too: Jira imports data from CSV and JSON.31

Questions and answers

Is Syntra a free alternative to Jira?

Both have free plans: Jira Free covers up to 10 users without Rovo AI,1 and Syntra Free covers up to 3 users and 5 projects with 100 AI requests a month. For a small software team free Jira is more generous, while Syntra gives you the AI and the project portfolio already on the free plan.

Can we use Syntra together with Jira?

Yes, the two-way Jira connector syncs the title, deadline, status and priority of tasks, so developers stay in Jira and a manager sees the portfolio and risks in Syntra. Connectors come with the Enterprise plan — €399 a month for a workspace with 50 users.

Is Jira available in Ukrainian?

No, Ukrainian is not in the official list of Jira interface languages.12 Syntra’s default interface language is Ukrainian, and its AI assistant answers in Ukrainian.

How much does Jira cost compared with Syntra?

Jira charges per user in US dollars: for a team of 10 on monthly billing, Standard is $9.70 and Premium $19.60 per user per month.1 Syntra charges per workspace in euros excluding VAT: Starter is €49 a month for 10 users and Business €149 for 25.
